Tara Abdalla loved ballet, drawing, writing poems and serving her country.
Richard Abdalla, Tara’s father, said she was friendly and outgoing. She didn’t show any outward signs of suffering in her phone conversations with him, while she was stationed at Hill Air Force Base, in Utah.
But on June 3, 2006, 23-year-old Tara took her own life.

A proposal that would broaden how South Dakota defines a veteran has been met with vitriol by some with military experience, yet received resounding support in the state House of Representatives.
House Bill 1179 was approved 63-4 last week, a tally so shocking that gasps could be heard in the Capitol chamber after the vote, according to American News correspondent Bob Mercer.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - When you think of a veteran, typically the image of a man might come to mind. But according to the Disabled American Veterans, more women now than ever before are serving or have served in the military.
Denita Oyeka served in the U.S. Army from 1992 until 2007. "All I ever wanted to do was serve my country," said Oyeka.
But Oyeka's love for her country almost ended tragically. After serving multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, Oyeka’s convoy was ambushed.

When she first walked through the maze of cubicles at the National Veterans Crisis Line in the winter of 2012, Ellen Goosenberg Kent thought she knew what to expect.
Goosenberg Kent grew up in Philadelphia during the Vietnam era, the daughter of a Marine who had served in World War II. An Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker, she had already made two films about soldiers coping with broken bodies and spirits after returning home from war.

Far fewer veterans use choice card and private health care than expected, VA says

Only 27,000 veterans have made appointments for private medical care since the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Choice Card program rolled out at the start of November, Secretary Robert “Bob” McDonald said this week.
It’s such a tiny number compared with the 9 million people who use VA health care that McDonald has asked for “flexibility” to reallocate billions of dollars for other pressing matters, from hiring more claims officers to help wade through a vast veterans’ benefits backlog to managing other patient medical needs.

VA details plan to eliminate veterans' homelessness

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs detailed its plan Friday to end veterans' homelessness in Los Angeles by 2016, pledging to open its West Los Angeles campus to permanent and temporary housing, and to place returning service members and their families in subsidized apartments throughout the county.
The VA's "action plan," developed as part of a legal settlement, will prioritize severely disabled, mentally ill and women veterans for housing in largely abandoned buildings on its sprawling 387-acre property.

One of the biggest challenges veterans face is getting the help they need during their readjustment to home. To help address these growing problems, The University of Alabama’s School of Social Work, and its partners, present “Service Member to Civilian (S2C): A National Summit on Improving Transitions” April 16-17 at the Bryant Conference Center.
