  • Michelle Obama's signature military initiative faces an uncertain future under Donald Trump

    Type of content: News

Joining Forces officials this week will celebrate five years of work highlighting veterans and military families, but they’ll also be wondering what the next few months will mean for the future of the effort.

The White House initiative — founded and led by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden — has been praised by many in the military community for successes in bridging the civilian-military divide, using media campaigns and corporate connections to tackle issues like veterans unemployment, military spouse credentialing and veterans homelessness.

  • Cohen Veterans Bioscience and Stanford partner to identify PTSD brain signatures

    Type of content: News

Despite many years of pioneering work characterizing the brains, behavior, and physiology of individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the field of psychiatry lacks objective biological measures for understanding the many biological variations in people with the same clinical diagnosis of PTSD. This means that there are no reliable ways to determine who will benefit from which treatment.

  • Military-connected charities are popular during CFC but still see decline in contributions

    Type of content: News

Military- and veteran-related charities get strong support from federal employees during the Combined Federal Campaign, but there has been an overall decline in donations since the CFC high point in 2011.

“There is no reason to believe the 2016 campaign will enjoy increases,” said Mike May of Maguire/Maguire Inc., a firm that provides support services for independent federations. Two of these federations are umbrella groups for a variety of military- and veteran-related charities, which makes it easier for donors to find charities serving those communities.

  • In the wake of scandal, Wounded Warrior Project outlines significant overhaul

    Type of content: News

Wounded Warrior Project officials are firing half of their executives, closing nine offices and redirecting millions in spending to mental health care programs and partnerships as part of an organization overhaul in the wake of spending scandals earlier this year.

Mike Linnington, a retired Army lieutenant general who took over as CEO of the embattled organization earlier this year, said the moves aren’t an indictment of past practices at the charity but a recognition of changes needed to keep the group relevant and providing the best resources possible to veterans.

  • McCain: New Suicide prevention initiative for veterans can be model for nationwide effort

    Type of content: News

Recently, the Department of Veterans Affairs released a sobering reminder of an epidemic that plagues our veterans: the suicide rate among military veterans has increased nearly 32 percent since 2001. Our youngest veterans (ages 18-29) have been hit the hardest and are nearly twice as likely to take their own lives than any other age group. The rate of suicide among veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is approximately 50 percent higher than the rate among the general public, and on average, we lose more than 20 military veterans to suicide each day.
