  • Veteran Employment Bill Passes Senate

    WASHINGTON -- Rep. Paul Cook, R-Apple Valley, announced Monday that the U.S. Senate has passed his bill, HR 244, the Hire Vets Act of 2017.

    The bill already passed the House of Representatives in February. Cook had reintroduced this bipartisan bill earlier this year. It was introduced last Congress and passed the House with unanimous support, but was unable to pass the Senate before the end of the year. The bill now heads back to the House for final passage as the Senate made minor technical changes to it.

  • Starbucks says it will hire 15,000 more veterans after facing backlash for refugee hiring plan

    Having recently hit its target of hiring 10,000 veterans, Starbucks just announced plans to hire 15,000 more. 

    Starbucks announced at its annual shareholders' meeting on Wednesday that it hit its initial goal of hiring 10,000 veterans and military spouses one year ahead of the company's 2018 deadline. The coffee chain is aiming to accomplish its new goal of hiring a total of 25,000 veterans by 2025.

    The Good
    Our nation is fortunate to have millions of people working to support veterans and military families. Through thousands of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, philanthropic foundations, businesses and research institutions, millions of Americans make it their mission to serve this remarkable community, fund their support, study their needs or employ them. While some complain about so-called market saturation, imagine if we only had 300 nonprofit organizations focused on the needs of military families and veterans instead of thousands? Where would they go when they really needed help?

    With all this knowledge in hand from our early work, what’s next?
    At NAVSO, we’re squarely focused on improving the lives of veterans and military families by transforming the veteran services marketplace. For our nonprofit members, we’re continually improving our existing tools and adding new resources to help them work more effectively and efficiently in meeting their client’s needs and in running their organizations well. Similarly, we’re working with existing and prospective funders who want to get more out of their grantmaking. We find many of these organizations actively seek additional insights outside the grantmaking cycle and we’re honored to serve as that sounding board for many of them. In one specific example, we’re sitting on a gold mine of information relating to veteran employment and we’ll be working with businesses (and nonprofits) to improve veteran employment outcomes across the country.

  • Veterans Getting Free Training For 'New Collar' Jobs

    It’s estimated the high tech industry will create more than 200,000 "new collar” jobs in the next three years. To fill those positions, IBM is tapping into a workforce that’s already well trained - veterans.

    “We need to get people to hit the ground running and be productive,” said Tampa IBM executive Stuart Bean. “And you just can’t fill them unless you have people who are already disciplined, already trained, mature enough, (and) can hit the ground running.”
