  • Team RWB helps veterans forge connections with their communities

    Type of content: News

Mike Erwin was fresh off a deployment to Afghanistan when he left Fort Bragg in 2009 to attend graduate school in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The next summer Erwin founded an organization that he hoped would help tie veterans to where they live and, in the process, provide a network of support centered on physical activity.

That organization - Team Red, White & Blue, or Team RWB for short - has far outpaced Erwin's expectations.

  • DoD official: Extend vets' Military OneSource access

    Type of content: News

Troops need a longer safety net of eligibility for Military OneSource's free benefits after they leave the military, according to a defense official.

“We want to extend it from 180 to 365 days to give people that pad of settling into a life, and then when you hit those barriers, circle back to Military OneSource,” said Rosemary Williams, deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy. She and others briefed Acting Army Secretary Patrick Murphy, his wife, Jenni, and members of his staff about Military OneSource on Thursday.

  • Study: The economic penalty Vietnam veterans and their kids pay

    Type of content: News

The Vietnam lottery was one of the largest accidental experiments in American history. Fates of millions of young men rested on a game of random chance. Whose draft number would be called? Who would have to serve?

By comparing those called up by the draft to those who weren't, economists have been able to measure the impact of the Vietnam war on veterans. The results are depressing. A decade after their military service, white veterans of the draft were earning about 15 percent less than their peers who didn't serve, according to studies from MIT economist Josh Angrist.
